David Shepherd

David was born in Manchester in 1946 and showed an aptitude for music at an early age.  He started formal music lessons at the age of 5, transferring to Saturday classes at the Royal Northern School of Music by the age of 7!  He started learning the organ at school in Stockport as soon as his feet could reach the pedals, and continued with classical organ lessons whilst at college and university.  His teacher was Dr John Birch of Chichester Cathedral.

By the time of his graduation, David had also gained an ARCM with honours in classical organ playing and an LRAM in classical organ teaching.  Leaving university in 1969, David taught for ten years in the south of England.  As a working hobby, playing the cinema organ was never far away, and regular broadcasts on 'The Organist Entertains' ensued, from venues as diverse as the Granada Tooting, the Odeon Leicester Square and Watford Town Hall, some solo broadcasts later took place.

Semi-retiring in 2003 to the home in S Lincs where he has lived since 1980, he has since been kept very busy, both as an accompanist to various local choral societies (including the South Holland Singers and Cantemus) and also as organist at the fine Harrison organ in St Botolph's Church, Boston, from which he semi-retired in 2013.

Since 1980, one pre-occupation has been the acquisition and installation of a 22 rank theatre pipe organ within his home.  This uses the four-manual console once at the Paramount, Tottenham Court Rd, London.  David is Membership Secretary of the British Institute of Organ Studies (BIOS) and also of the Cinema Organ Society, and is a Vice President of the Theatre Organ Club.

In addition to his organ playing, he enjoys trying to keep fit, and driving his 1960s classic cars.
